TIME project focuses upon; non-textual graphic image based communication, encodedmeaning, and varied scenarios and contexts where symbols are seen and used.
For the secod second part of the project, I created a short time-based media piece, responding to a current or near-future scenario. The focus is on communicating meaning without text, by using visual language and symbolism.

1. Design a sign with specific functionality and meaning within a chosen current or near-future scenario. The sign must demonstrate control of line, shape, form, scale, colour, and detail, using only black and white plus a maximum of two colours.

2. Produce a digitally rendered time-based media output that communicates change over time. Both outcomes respond to shared project themes and workshops. The time-based media must share the same visual language as the sign and serve the same scenario, functioning as a temporal extension of the sign rather than a separate outcome.Project
OverviewI developed a speculative near-future scenario to define the context for both outcomes. The sign and the time-based media were designed as functional elements within this scenario, sharing a unified visual language and narrative logic.
Theme: Conformity Under Authority
Scenario Topic: The Suppression of Free Thought
ScenarioSociety has reached a point where freedom of speech no longer exists. Any written content shared on social media must first be submitted to a state authority for approval. Only after receiving official confirmation can the content be published. In this context, a new sign becomes necessary. Once an idea is approved, a symbol appears on the screen to indicate that the thought has been authorised and is ready to be shared.
Process
The square represents institutional power, with its sharp and rigid structure reflecting authority and control. The circle symbolises the public, appearing flexible and adaptive yet vulnerable to external pressure. Colour strengthens this contrast: red squares communicate power and dominance, while green circles suggest innocence and consent. The animation loops continuously, suggesting an ongoing cycle of systemic control.
This animation was created in After Effects. Sound design was developed in Premiere Pro, combining an industrial soundscape with manipulated excerpts from Trump’s speeches. The robotic distortion enhances the mechanised quality of authority.
Audio is synchronised with movement. When the red squares apply pressure, excerpts from Donald Trump’s speeches are heard; when the green circle resists, recordings from public protests in the US emerge. The sound is spatially divided: Trump’s voice plays in the right channel, while public resistance occupies the left, making the political conflict more explicit.
