QUOTE/UNQUOTE project explores how meaning can be communicated through typography. Responding to the quote “You change the world by being yourself,” by Yoko Ono, the task was to interpret and emphasise its message through the semantic use of typographic form.

For the first part of the project, I designed a poster including the given quote and the name Yoko Ono. The final poster was produced using the screen-printing technique.

The Brief

1.Design a flat, image-free typographic A3 poster using only black ink and one of the given typefaces. The poster must include the provided quote and the name of the person who said it while communicating the meaning of the quote through the semantic use of typography.

2. Design a flat, imagel-free typographic leaflet using only black ink, demonstrating typographic hierarchy and editorial structure. The leaflet must use at least three levels of text hierarchy. It should include the quote, name, and a 300–400 word reflective text.

Project
Overview
After conducting secondary research on the meaning of the quote and the life of Yoko Ono, I designed a poster informed by these insights. The poster and leaflet share the same visual language, and the typeface was chosen to reflect the motivational and action-oriented nature of the quote.

Inspiration

The word that most effectively communicated the concept was identified as change. Multiple variations were developed by manipulating this word. Inspired by the visual logic of a slot machine, several iterations were produced and evaluated, using the slot machine reference to imply constant change.

Process

Printing

Four different paper types were explored for this project using the screen printing technique. Among them, Mirri Card, a glossy black 270 gsm paper, produced the most effective result. When printed with matte black ink, the surface created a strong contrast between matte and gloss.Because the paper is reflective, viewers can partially see their own reflection on the surface. This interaction reinforces the message of the quote and strengthens its impact. The final version of the poster was printed on this glossy black stock.
